In this week’s Covid-19 Medical Grand Rounds, we begin with an update on the pandemic from UCSF epidemiologist George Rutherford. The U.S. remains on a positive trajectory, mostly due to widespread vaccination, but about half the country remains unvaccinated. Next, David Studdert, Professor of Medicine and Law at Stanford, returns to provide an update on the legal, ethical, and political implications of vaccine requirements, including so-called vaccine passports. Kevin Volpp, Director of the Center for Health Incentives and Behavioral Economics (CHIBE) at the University of Pennsylvania, discusses the role of incentives, including direct payments and lotteries, on vaccine uptake. Finally, Carina Marquez, UCSF Assistant Professor of Medicine and Associate Director of Equity for the UCSF-Gladstone Center for AIDS Research, discusses what we’ve learned about efforts to vaccinate vulnerable and underserved populations. The session is moderated by UCSF Department of Medicine Chair Bob Wachter.
