Over the years, people have proposed various theories about the reasons for the Titanic's sinking: Captain Smith was drunk; the builders cut corners; the lookouts didn't have binoculars; the rudder was too small. However, none of these theories holds up under scrutiny. Smith never drank at sea and was on the bridge all night; the Titanic was built on a "cost plus" contract, meaning that the more money spent on construction, the better it was for the builders; the naked eye is better for spotting icebergs at night because binoculars reduce the field of vision and are intended for inspecting objects, not detecting them; and the Titanic's rudder was exactly the same size as its sister ship, which its wartime captain considered the most manoeuvrable ship he had ever commanded.

Therefore, the more you learn about the Titanic disaster, the more you realize that the truth about what really happened the night it sank is far stranger than any fiction could imagine. And to explore that truth, I suggest visiting the Titanic Museum in Belfast.
The Titanic Museum in Belfast, Northern Ireland, tells the story of the Titanic from its conception, construction, and launch to its maiden and final voyage, and its subsequent place in history. The museum is located next to the Titanic Slipways, the Harland and Wolff Drawing Offices, and the Hamilton Graving Dock.
