In this short excerpt from our video on Margaret Thatcher, we take a look at the early history of the Suez Canal and the economic and political factors that led to British troops being dispatched to secure European interests in the midst of a nationalist revolution that deposed its ruler Khedive Ismail Pasha in 1882. The conflict would result in a permanent British military presence in the region that would last until the Suez Crisis of 1956.
