The DS 7 is the flagship SUV from the premium French brand DS Automobiles. With bold styling and a focus on comfort over sportiness, it aims to offer an alternative to the German luxury SUV establishment. But does its quirky character make it a compelling choice?

Avant-Garde Styling Inside and Out
There's no mistaking the DS 7 for anything else on the road. The exterior design is eye-catching, with a large grille, slim LED lights, and bold creases and chrome accents. The rear is particularly distinctive with its 3D-effect taillights. You'll either love or hate the look, but it certainly turns heads.

The interior design is equally daring, though perhaps overly fussy. There are interesting textures and shapes used throughout the cabin, but it feels a bit overdone and mismatched at times. Material quality is good up top but gets scratchy lower down. The unusual control layouts take some getting used to as well.

Plenty of Space, But Quirks Remain
As a midsize SUV, the DS 7 offers generous space for passengers and cargo. There's ample room for four adults, though the rear middle seat is quite tight. The 555-liter trunk is one of the largest in this class, besting options like the BMW X1 and Audi Q3. However, an annoying ridge in the load floor hinders practicality when the rear seats are folded.

On the tech front, the 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster looks modern but lacks configurability. The 12-inch touchscreen is reasonably intuitive but has dated graphics. Thankfully wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard.

Comfort Over Sportiness
In keeping with the DS brand's focus on refined driving, the 7 delivers a comfortable and relaxed driving experience. The trick camera-based suspension does an admirable job smoothing out bumps, though it can get unsettled over larger imperfections.

While far from sporty, the DS 7 handles respectably for a midsize SUV. Body roll is well-controlled and the light steering is a boon in parking lots. But push too hard and you'll experience understeer as the front tires fight for grip. This is no performance vehicle.

The powertrain lineup includes a 1.5-liter diesel making 131 hp or plug-in hybrid variants with an electric-only range of up to 43 miles. Both pair with an 8-speed automatic. The PHEV options are punchier for passing, while the diesel is more efficient for highway cruising.

Should You Buy A DS 7?
The DS 7 occupies an interesting space in the premium SUV segment. Its avant-garde styling and focus on comfort make it a compelling alternative to the typical German luxury offerings. Those put off by the quirky interior and lack of athleticism may want to look elsewhere.

But for buyers seeking a premium SUV that stands out from the crowd, the DS 7 could be an intriguing choice - assuming you can look past its quirks. With reasonable pricing and a spacious cabin, this audacious French machine offers a different flavor in a crowded class of luxury crossovers.
