Avocado trees are categorized as either Type A or Type B cultivars. While avocados do produce both male and female flowers, they produce them at different times of the day, so Avocado trees are not reliably self-fertile in their native climate under ideal conditions. Type A and Type B avocados produce male and female flowers on different schedules, so Type A and Type B cultivars should be planted for cross pollination and the best chance at fertility.

However, under certain climatic conditions, an avocado tree can be self-fertile. If you only have room for one avocado tree, you can successfully set fruit. Some varieties are better at this than others, and your chances will increase with hand pollination.
