When Charles Booker was running for U.S. Senate in 2020, advisors suggested he shouldn’t waste time canvassing in rural Eastern Kentucky. But he was determined to make those connections, and the response was overwhelmingly positive: Folks said thank you for caring enough to even come talk to me. “Disagreement can be healthy, and it is necessary. But we have to still be able to see the humanity in one another… even if we disagree, we are in this doggone thing together.”

Booker is Kentucky’s director of Faith-Based & Community Initiatives and previously served as the state’s youngest Black legislator in nearly 90 years.
