➡️ Artificial Airways
The two primary types of artificial airways are endotracheal and tracheostomy tubes. Both types are similar yet unique, and they each have different parts.

➡️ Pilot Balloon Definition
Hanging from the cuff of these tubes is what's known as a pilot balloon which is used to monitor the cuff's integrity and pressure once the tube is inflated and secured within the trachea. The balloon has a valve in which a syringe is attached for the inflation and deflation of the cuff. This can be done simply by pumping air into the cuff for inflation or removing air to deflate the cuff. The balloon itself actually inflates along with the cuff which is an indicator of how much pressure has been inserted. You should know that, in general, the pilot balloon is not meant to help with tube positioning, preventing aspiration, or minimizing trauma. That is the responsibility of the cuff itself. Again, the pilot balloon is meant to help inflate the cuff and monitor its integrity.
