The BMW E34 is the third generation of the BMW 5 Series, that the company produced from 1987 to 1996. It was first launched as a sedan in 1988. The E34 also had a "Touring" station wagon body style which was added in 1992. BMW replaced the E34 chassis with the E39 chassis in December 1995. BMW continued to produce E34 Touring models until 1996.

The E34 marked the first time all-wheel drive was incorporated into the 5 Series with the 525iX, and the first V8 engine to be used in a 5 Series. Also, the E34 saw the introduction of ASC (stability control), ASC+T (traction control) a 6-speed manual transmission, and EDC adjustable damping to the 5 Series family.

There was an untypical multiple range of engines that were fitted over the chassis' lifetime as 9 different engines were used. These consisted of straight-four, straight-six and V8 engines.

The E34 M5 which had the most powerful engine with 335hp, is powered by the S38 straight-six engine and was produced in sedan and wagon body styles.
