Tax attorney Anthony E. Parent explains which three things you should never tell the IRS. Because once you say something, it's out there. A couple of things to consider before you say anything are 1. Can it help you? and 2. Will it hurt you?
The first thing you don't want to tell the IRS is a LIE. Why not? because they won't like you for it and won't do you any favors. You will only hurt your negotiation position. Many people don't understand that providing a false statement to the IRS is a federal crime. People have gone to jail for falsely stating what their assets are.
The second thing to not tell the IRS is something you would tell a friend. They are not your friends. Even though the agents may be personable and friendly, don't feel like getting buddy-buddy with them. Maintain a respectful distance.
The third thing never to tell the IRS is something you're not 100% sure of. What you say may be used against you. You can harm your case in an unforeseen manner. So sometimes the answer should be "I don't know," "I can't remember." Sometimes the right thing to say is "I wish to consult with an attorney." If things start to get unpleasant, remember to end the conversation politely and avoid being branded as "difficult."
Also, get the power of knowledge. Don't expect the IRS to teach you how to solve your problem. You're not alone and not the only one going the wrong way. The IRS is an intimidating collection force, but there is a way to find permanent relief, and we've developed a system for doing it once, and doing it right.
