Not everyone has perfect spelling skills, and English is not the easiest language in which to learn how to spell. Many words break the rules, and an adult who struggles with spelling may find it hard to hide their difficulties at work or school. There are strategies that can help, including strengthening phonemic awareness, learning Dolch words, and looking at word origins. Learn more about spelling habits, and how to improve and practice your spelling skills as an adult.

In this video, Liz Loly, an experienced teacher, parent, and dyslexia advocate, explains how adults can improve their spelling.

6 Spelling Tips for Adults:
1. Learn English spelling rules and some of the most common exceptions
2. Study Dolch/sight words as they are the most frequently used words in English and make up approximately 50% of all texts
3. Look for familiar prefixes and suffixes and think about their meaning
4. Read as often as possible - find what you enjoy
5. Research the origin of words
6. Use technology, such as spell check and speech recognition tools. Learning to touch-type can also help.

“Spelling is not a sign of intelligence but sadly is often judged.” - Liz Loly
