A car inspection is good for those motorists feeling nervous or unsettled about buying a used car: https://bit.ly/3nuoKSA

With three decades of motoring experience, here are my five decisive questions to answer about buying a car. If you answer yes to any of these it’s reasonable to say that a professional car examination is a worthwhile investment.

Companies like The AA, The RAC and Clickmechanic offer a car inspection service on used cars pretty much anywhere in the UK mainland.

Prices for AA and RAC range from around £85 up to £200. Clickmechanic is a bit cheaper and starts at £75 to £125 (depending on your location).

The five questions that determine if you should buy a car inspection service:

1. Does perfect car body paintwork make it more or less likely that you would buy (based on a vehicle with more than 50,000 miles on the clock)?

2. Do you tend to ignore the sound of the engine when running hot and cold?

3. Will you test drive the car for less than ten minutes?

4. Do you glance at service records including previous MOT certificates, services and additional workshop invoices without thorough investigation?

5. Would you spend up to £125 to find out that you should not buy?

Answers to these questions can help make up your mind about buying a vehicle inspection from any of the leading providers. This video goes into details about each of the questions listed to see how confident you are in your knowledge and understanding of buying second hand.

Question 5 is of most importance. If you are unwilling to spend money that offers a definitive answer on the worthiness of a car, a car inspection is unsuitable.

Having said that, it is common sense to take measures that ensure you don’t buy a vehicle that is either unsafe, illegal or deemed to be mechanically costly in the months and years ahead.

Alongside this video, I have composed a full text guide that compares two leading UK services. They are Clickmechanic and The AA. I compare price, car components inspected, time frames to inspection and the type of reports you can expect to see from the money you have invested.

Remember, a car inspection should be booked before you lay a deposit or buy the car outright. This way, you will not lose additional money should the car turn out to be a lemon.
