The Man in the Mask story

He was dressed in all-white. The figure vanished into the snow before reappearing a bit closer to me than before. The sun shone down onto the ice and reflected onto something he was carrying. It was a rifle. He stomped towards my house but the snow muted his footsteps apart from the occasional crunch. Our place was the only one for miles.

As I jumped up, I spilt my glass of cola all over myself. The black liquid bled into the white rug.

I looked out the window. The figure had gone. I sighed and scanned the distance for anything unusual. Who was he? A hunter out for his daily prey? A workman looking at the fences that had been broken by the storm? Or…something else? I put my forehead to the pane of the window, felt the ice-cold glass cool my red face and closed my eyes. The glass shook. The figure was face-to-face with me. His bulging eyes stared right at me. He didn’t move. He wore a white mask which bore no facial expression. I opened my mouth to scream but nothing came out. He held up his rifle and pointed towards the bolted front door. I shook my head. He extended his finger over the trigger of the gun and pointed again. I clenched my fists and didn’t move. He disappeared and then I heard the sound of glass shattering.

The masked man left a trail of broken glass from his entry into the house. I could hear his footsteps as I ran out the back door and into the whiteness.

As I started to sprint across the ice, I heard the front door swing open. The ice dazzled and shone like a glimmering diamond into my already wet eyes. I didn’t look back. As I got towards the end the lake, I heard a faint crack. Like an avalanche, the ice fell apart around my feet and plunged me into the deep. Thumping the ice above me, the freezing water stole my breath from my body. Suddenly, I saw him above me. He raised his rifle and pointed it straight at me. His bulging eyes seemed to soften as he knelt down to the ice and aimed his gun sideways. I pounded the ceiling above me but could feel my limbs weaken and grow heavy. My eyes started to close and I couldn’t gain the power to reopen them. Was this it? It started to go black. Blam! The bullets zipped by me as I tried to dance out of their path. The ice around me crumpled into nothing and vanished around my body. Crack! A huge arm punched through the ice and pulled me out of the blackness.
