Criterium du Dauphine Stage 8 was mayhem last year and would have brought back bad memories for Richie Porte after losing the yellow jersey in this race to Fuglsang in the last stage back in 2017. INEOS had the strongest team to defend that jersey, with Geraint Thomas presumably to work for Porte, but a technical descent finish and Haig with Padun as a satellite rider, set the scene for a difficult last 30km for Porte.
