The BlackCat / ALPHV ransomware group joined Reddit moderators to protest Reddit’s new API pricing changes…oh and they’re also demanding $4.5 million USD. There’s a bit to unpack here.

📉 Reddit API Changes 📉
Reddit has been under fire the last month after they announced they would begin charging third parties to use their APIs. This frustrated many Reddit users who rely on third party apps to interact with Reddit’s terrible design.

One popular app, Apollo, already said they’re shutting down on June 30th because the new pricing policy would cost $20 million per year.

Needless to say, there’s been some drama.

💻 Reddit February Hack 💻
On February 5, 2023, Reddit identified a phishing campaign that targeted Reddit employees. After compromising a Reddit employee’s access, the hacker accessed internal docs, code, and internal business / system dashboards.

📆 Flash Forward to June 17th 📆
Reddit pops up on BlackCat / ALPHV’s leak site with claims of stealing confidential information.

The group is demanding $4.5 million USD and for Reddit to withdraw their API pricing changes.

Part time extortionist, part-time robin hood 🏹

You just can’t make this stuff up.
