We took to the streets of Belfast city centre on Wednesday to gauge the public's opinion on proposed new laws to curb youth smoking and restrict vapes.

It was announced this week that Northern Ireland would be included in Westminster’s Tobacco and Vapes Bill, subject to approval by the NI Assembly. The proposed legislation will make it illegal to sell tobacco products to anyone born on or after January 1, 2009, and will provide powers to allow for further regulatory measures to address youth vaping.

Relating to this, the UK Government plans include a ban on disposable vapes, with the ban being progressed under environmental legislation in Great Britain.

The Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs is considering next steps for Northern Ireland.
