📖➡️ The veined octopus, also known as the coconut-carrying octopus, is a medium sized cephalopod that got it’s nickname in 2009.

Researchers from Australia spent over 500 hours observing their behavior and published a paper titled “Defensive tool use in a coconut-carrying octopus” — once published BAM 💥 That nickname took over.

They watched fascinated as they observed this species dig up coconut shells & carefully blast them with jets of water to clean them.

In situations like the one in this video— the clever coconut octopus at some point in their journey came to the conclusion that its damaged coconut needed an additional shell to barricade the front!

🛡 When approached the curious looking octopus would pull up its makeshift shell door 🚪 to shield it’s squishy vulnerable body!

The researchers concluded that the discovery of this octopus tiptoeing across the sea floor with its prized coconut shells suggests that even marine invertebrates engage in behaviors that we once thought the preserve of humans.
