So which Nest camera should you get? Do you go with the fancy new Nest Cam IQ or the cheaper, older Nest Cam Indoor? I guess it comes down to one questions. Do people annoy you?

The upgrades in the Nest CAM IQ are noticeable when compared to the Nest Cam Indoor but that doesn’t necessarily mean it is the best smart home security cam for you. The 4k Resolution and Familiar Face recognition are the standout features but are they worth the extra $100 and the corresponding Nest Aware subscription?

For the Nest Cam Indoor, I’ve given it a score of 4.6 Eh’s out of 5. For the Nest Cam IQ, a score of 5 Eh’s out of 5. On a product by product basis, these Nest Cameras are better than the D-Link Omna. BUT I will add an asterix to these scores because my scoring system doesn’t take into account the long-term cost of products.

When it comes to design, the two cameras look better than the average looking security camera. They look clean and don’t stick out visually like a sore thumb. The color scheme in my home is quite light so the matte finish of the white Nest Cam IQ made it blend into the home nicely. If size is a big deal for you, the Nest Cam Indoor has a much smaller footprint.

Both cameras can be mounted with the Nest Cam Indoor having the option to mount magnetically. The Nest Cam IQ has a 1/4 inch threaded hole which means it’s going to be compatible with tripod mounts and assuming other types of security camera mounts.

The speaker on the Nest Cam IQ is much larger than the Cam Indoor so communicating through the unit is going to be easier.

Both products use the video footage as a motion sensor and the are quite accurate. During our testing phase, the Nest Cam Indoor automatically picked up on the door that the camera was pointed at which was neat. You can ONLY customize the zones through Nest Aware which is basically a web add-on for the nest cameras. If you’re wondering what we think of the Nest Aware, check out that review.

Both cameras use IR Led’s to provide 20 ft worth of night vision. You can extend this range by adding another IR light like the LIFX+.

When it comes to video quality, the 4K sensor of the Nest Cam IQ is amazing. Not because it provides 4 times the resolution is 1080p but because the Nest Cam IQ will zoom into areas where it thinks motion is being detected.

When it comes to overall functionality, the Nest Cam IQ edges out the indoor by a small margin. The biggest in my opinion is the Familiar Faces feature that comes with the Nest Cam IQ.

If you’re on vacation and can’t use WiFi or a Cellular connection on your mobile device, Nest will allow you to watch your cameras through the web.

If you’re an Apple watch user, Nest does provide an Apple Watch app. As I mentioned earlier, the stand out feature for the Nest Cam IQ is the familiar faces feature. It is a cloud-based feature so the Nest CAM IQ which is understandable from a technology standpoint but a kick in the nuts for the average user since this camera isn’t cheap at all.

Familiar Faces relies heavily on the 4K sensor and it documents the images of all the people it sees which is neat. Basically, the more you show up in front of the camera, the less you’ll be considered an object worth being notified about.

If you’re really annoyed with humans, you should go with the Nest Cam IQ as it won’t trigger a notification unless it’s a face that it thinks is familiar or a complete stranger. It only takes a couple of days for that feature to start working so you might have to bear through a period of notification hell.

When it comes to compatibility, both Nest Cams work with IFTTT and Google Home. You can your Nest account to Google Home but you can't do anything with the camera footage.

Now if you’re bummed out that Nest isn’t directly compatible with Apple Home, here’s a bit of a reprieve. It doesn’t matter unless you plan using the Nest cameras as part of an automation. And that problem can be worked around since you could use IFTTT or Stringify for the automations. It’s just not as slick.

Check out the end of the video if you want help with choosing the right camera between Nest Cam IQ and Indoor. I've also included the main reason why I WOULDN'T get this smart home camera at the end as well.
