We certainly know about acids and bases, and we know about the Lewis model of acidity and basicity. In transition metal complexes, the metal centers are acting as Lewis acids, and the ligands are acting as Lewis bases. But certain types of acids and bases interact best in this context. Hard acids interact best with hard bases, and soft acids interact best with soft bases. What do we mean by hard and soft? Watch this and find out!
