Screenwriter and star Emma Thompson won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for this definitive adaptation of Jane Austen’s classic novel, which also marked the English-language debut of director Ang Lee and the international breakthrough of Thompson’s co-star Kate Winslet, who received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress for only her second screen appearance. Thompson and Winslet play Elinor and Marianne Dashwood, whose family’s sudden destitution forces them to seek financial security in marriage. Also featuring Alan Rickman and Hugh Grant as the sisters’ prospective suitors, Sense and Sensibility was a triumphant critical and commercial success worldwide, and inspired a new wave of Austen adaptations for the big screen.
