Friday 21st April has been declared a public holiday in Kenya to mark Eid-ul-Fitr.
This is the first time in Kenya's history that Eid-ul-Fitr holiday has been declared after completion of 29 days of Ramadhan instead of 30 days. Let's hope this is an error and it will be corrected.
Remember, the only acceptable method to determine the correct day for Eid-ul-Fitr, and for observation of other important days, is the actual sighting of the crescent, and because the Islamic months are either 29 days or 30 days, Eid-ul-Fitr holiday has always been declared on the basis of 30 days of Ramadhan.
However, Friday being declared the Eid-ul-Fitr holiday does not make it the correct day for Eid-ul-Fitr. We are obliged to look for the crescent tomorrow, which is Thursday, 29th Ramadhan. This is the Sunnah practice.
Astronomical data clearly shows there is no chance for the crescent to be sighted anywhere tomorrow, at least not in areas we share the night with. However, we should still verify this by upholding the Sunnah and looking for it.
Some people confuse Astronomy with Astrology. They consider astronomy as opinion based calculations which are used to derive "predictions" which can be overruled by forces of nature. This is not the case, otherwise we would have seen contradictory data from different centres of Astronomy. We can see clearly all astronomers are giving us identical data, including those from Saudi Arabia...and not only for tomorrow, but for every single detail of the movement of the moon throughout the year.
In the absence of reliable confirmation of sighting tomorrow (Thursday - which would be nothing else but a miracle), Friday will be 30th Ramadhan, which will make it Akhir Juma and hence, a very important day of fasting.
Remember, the correct days for our religious observations are also not determined by our conveniences. We should be happy to fast on a public holiday and observe Eid-ul-Fitr on a working day. This Ramadhan alone, we fasted on Good Friday and Easter Monday. Two holidays. We can also fast on a third holiday this Ramadhan. It's a small price to pay for upholding the correct practice as taught by our Prophet. peace and blessings of allah be upon him. AI voice configured by brother Amani chiefwette.
