Salt Lake City is the state capital and seat of Salt Lake County in north-central Utah, United States, and is located on the Jordan River near the southeastern end of Great Salt Lake. As the international capital of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons), it has an impact on the social, economic, political, and cultural lives of people across Utah and the neighboring states of Idaho, Nevada, and Wyoming. The city is built on the benches of old Lake Bonneville, at the foot of the Wasatch Range, which rises more than one mile above the Salt Lake valley level. Salt Lake City is located in the heart of a mountainous region that encompasses Ogden to the north and Provo to the south.
