On 25 April 1974, military officers in the Portuguese capital of Lisbon staged a coup d'etat, overthrowing the authoritarian Estado Novo government and beginning Portugal's transtion to democracy. The largely bloodless coup was accompanied by a spontaneous civil uprising which saw thousands of Lisboetas take to the streets in support of the coup, demanding their civil and democratic rights. Days afterwards, on 29 April, ITN's Michael Oliver reported from the Portuguese capital on the popular demonstrations that continued to fill the streets, and the problems and concerns facing the new provisional government as it sought to establish a new, democratic order in Portugal.
