Boris Johnson praised the Queen for shaping the modern constitutional monarchy with her "indomitable spirit".

Concluding his speech in the House of Commons, the former premier said: "The fact that today we can say with such confidence God save the King is a tribute to him but above all to Elizabeth the Great who worked so hard for the good of her country, not just now but for generations to come. Theresa May reduced the whole of the House of Commons to laughter with a story about the Queen and some dropped cheese.

The former prime minister said: “Her Majesty loved the countryside, and she was down to earth and a woman of common sense.
