Magnus Carlsen was known for his attacking style as a teenager, but has since developed into a universal player. He uses a variety of openings to make it harder for opponents to prepare against him, but his most played opening is the Ruy Lopez. The Ruy Lopez remains the most commonly used amongst the open games in master play. Due to the difficulty for Black in achieving equality, a common nickname for the opening is "The Spanish Torture".
