"People look around in the world and still don't notice anything." (Marius, 32, from Mainz)

Hi, I'm Julian, and I make films for SWR. Recently, a colleague told me about a notice she had read. A blind man wrote about his hobbies and whether someone would like to accompany him. I called and arranged to meet him for coffee. When Marius opens the door for the first time, we immediately get along well. I tell him about my job, and he is immediately excited about the idea of making a film about his daily life.

Marius wants to show that as a blind person, he works from home on the computer, chats with friends on WhatsApp, takes the bus to town to do things, and has athletic hobbies. In other words, he leads a completely normal life. He emphasizes that a problem in society is that blind people are often underestimated. "People often ask me if I can take an escalator. I jump from the five-meter diving board; of course, I can take an escalator!"

At the same time, there are areas where Marius relies on the support of sighted people, whether for orientation in unfamiliar or non-accessible places or in job searching. Despite having completed vocational training, it took him eight years and over 500 applications to find a suitable job. A period that also had a negative impact on his mental health. It requires employers willing to invest in a long training period and show patience.

After getting to know each other a bit better, I realize that Marius's perception of the world is not "less" than that of sighted people. His perception is just different. And in certain areas, it is significantly more pronounced than mine. We quickly notice that he hears things that I don't even notice. He himself says that his senses, such as hearing and touch, are very heightened. He doesn't necessarily want to be able to see.

"I would try it for a while, but if it becomes too much for me, I would also stop."

Our society is already too focused on the visual. What is lost is the ability to "listen with the heart." I also found it fascinating to learn that Marius doesn't try to imagine what I, for example, look like. It doesn't matter to him. "It's about the character, the essence."

The day after our shoot, we also went climbing. You can find this bonus clip here:
