All-new Rolls-Royce Arcadia Droptail - A Symphony of Craftsmanship and Elegance
Rolls-Royce Motor Cars presents Arcadia Droptail, the third bespoke Droptail commission in the Coachbuild series. The intricate wood sections, requiring 8,000 hours of craftsmanship, embody the essence of a heavenly place from Ancient Greek mythology. Aptly named after Arcadia, this commission marks the inaugural appearance of the Droptail roadster body style in Rolls-Royce's contemporary lineage.

In the realm of Coachbuild, clients meticulously curate every aspect of these masterpieces, guiding a process executed by what I firmly believe is the most gifted team of experts in the luxury industry. The Arcadia Droptail stands as a prime illustration of this approach. Intrinsically linked to the client's individuality and preferences, this motor car serves as a canvas for capturing their essence. Empowered by this profound connection, we have seized the opportunity to make visionary statements in design, craftsmanship, and engineering. In doing so, we proudly showcase to the world our ambitious spirit and unparalleled capabilities.


The exterior palette of the Arcadia Droptail, though intricately detailed, primarily aims to honor the elegance and proportions of the coachwork. The client was especially drawn to the clean, monolithic surfacing and the impactful utilization of negative sculpture in the Droptail design. These features are accentuated by the motor car's subdued paint colors, strategically chosen to reflect sunlight and create dramatic shadows. This interplay of light and shadow serves to accentuate the numerous nuanced design elements of the Droptail, making it a captivating showcase of sophisticated automotive design.


Crafting the interior of the Droptail presented a formidable task for Rolls-Royce artisans due to the use of high-density Santos Straight Grain hardwood. This wood type boasts one of the finest grains among all the varieties used in Rolls-Royce vehicles. However, it demands meticulous handling, as it can easily tear during machining and develop 'checks' (parallel cracks to the grain) during the drying process.

Despite the challenges associated with this delicate material, Santos Straight Grain is extensively employed in the Droptail, extending to the aerodynamically functional rear deck section. Here, the open-pore veneer's grain is meticulously laid at a precise 55° angle. Overcoming the complexities of the geometry, Rolls-Royce artisans utilized a total of 233 wood pieces in the creation of the Arcadia Droptail, with the rear deck alone featuring 76 intricately applied pieces for a flawless composition.

Themes from the clock are paired with the instrument dials, sharing materials, techniques and execution. They feature the same repeated guilloché pattern, as well as brushed and polished brightwork and frosted white inserts, recalling the colorway of the motor car.
