Protocol Labs created Filecoin as an open-source, cloud-based decentralized storage network (DSN) solution that enables anyone to rent out spare storage space on their computer or to rent space from another computer on the network. Centralized storage solutions, such as Google storage or Dropbox, are always at the risk of being hacked, which puts user data at a risk, but Filecoin removes the need to store data centrally and secures data by splitting it up and recombining it when the user requests it. Filecoin is particularly useful for enterprises that are seeking new ways of storing and retrieving big volumes of data securely, as it greatly reduces the risks of systems being hacked and data being compromised. It is also faster, cheaper and more efficient than most centralized storage solutions.

It is being created by Protocol Labs, spearheaded by Juan Benet, a computer scientist and engineer. Juan Benet is the founder of Protocol Labs and he created Filecoin. He is an American computer scientist and engineer and he is the creator of the InterPlanetary File System (IPFS), which is an open-source, peer-to-peer, decentralized web protocol. In addition to IPFS, he also created Libp2p, IPLD (InterPlanetary Linked Data), Multiformats, CoinList, and the SAFT Project (simple agreement for future tokens).

Filecoin is built on top of the InterPlanetary File System (IPFS), which allows the network to store and share data on a web-based decentralized network. The amount of storage available on the Filecoin platform has surpassed the 2.5 billion gigabytes (2.5EiB) threshold. Filecoin has created a larger free market for data storage by using millions of computers to create a massive storage network, and this drives the price of storage down significantly. Filecoin helps the environment in its own way, by using the space and resources on existing computers Instead of building new ones. The risk of being hacked is greatly reduced because the network is decentralized, data is split up and there is no single point of attack or access. The Filecoin Frontier Accelerator is an initiative launched in 2021 by LongHash Ventures and backed by Filecoin, where 11 startups will participate in a 12-week accelerator program and receive $20,000 in grant funding.

The FIL coin is native to the Filecoin network and is used as payment for storage services. It also gives miners to ensure files are stored reliably over time, as FIL coins could eventually become highly valuable and these coins can be traded on some of the most popular exchanges.
