Paulo Savaget speaks at the Gates Internal Symposium on December 2016.

Authoritarianism and hate aren’t new in politics, yet their influence grows at a fast pace. While people increasingly despise the establishment, the far-right gathers distrust by offering an option for people looking for change. That is happening not only in the Global North, but also in several middle and lower-middle-income regions, such as Brazil, India and the Philippines. I’ll briefly cover the Brazilian recent political history, mentioning milestones and embedded characteristics within our political system, before discussing in more depth the reawakening of the far-right. By doing that, we can hopefully engage in open-ended discussions, aiming at revealing similarities and differences between different regions, not only to expand our perceptions of what is happening, but also to discuss potential reactions.
