In this video I have five different soft power latching circuits for your Arduino or any microcontroller you may be using! Each has its own advantages and unique properties and I have tested each circuit from 9-12.6V.

A soft latching circuit has the advantage of using a modern, intuitive, and low cost tactile momentary switch / button to power your device on and off. Most consumer products are currently using a single press on, and long press off type of power button, and your Arduino should too!

Additionally, since none of the current flows through the small tactile switch, it does not have to be sized to accommodate your main load. This keeps the size and cost down for your project and latching circuit.

I cannot claim to have designed these circuits myself so I would like to give a special thanks to the following members of the EEV blogs forum who assisted, found, or outright designed these circuits in a forum post that can be found here:

Special thanks goes to Peabody, MarkF, Ian.M, Zero999 for creating or suggesting these schematics.

Since many of these circuits use SMT packages, I found DIP replacements for some of these packages so that I could breadboard the circuit.

Circuit 1:
BC414 was replaced with BC547ATACT

Circuit 2:
IRF7319 was replaced with IRF7309
BAV99 was replaced with 1N4454

Circuit 3:
IRF7207 was replaced with SFT1342-W
BSS123 was replaced with TN0610N3
BAT54 was replaced with BAT85S

Circuit 4:
FDC638P was replaced with NDP6020P
2N7002 was replaced with VN2222LL
BAT54 was replaced with BAT85S
