We all know the electric car is the future of mobility. The Tesla Model 3 has proven that EVs can match its petrol-powered counterparts on range, while the Porsche Taycan shows that you don't need to have an engine to have fun. Then there's the Volkswagen ID.3, widely regarded as the next chapter in VW's history, and the Renault Zoe gives you zero-emission thrills on a budget.

But FuelsEurope, a consortium of 40 oil companies in Europe, claims that you don't need an electric car to reduce your carbon footprint. Instead, all you need is synthetic fuel, which is created by combining carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere with hydrogen gas (H2).

Naturally, FuelsEurope has its critics. Though companies such as McLaren are keen to show the world that synthetic fuels have a place alongside EVs.
