Gornergrat peak of 3,089 m (10,135 ft) is located in the Swiss canton of Valais, and can be accessed by the Gornergrat Railway (German: Gornergrat Bahn), a mountain rack railway from Zermatt. It is a 29-minute ride via Riffelalp, Rotenboden and Riffelberg (with limited stops at Findelbach and Landtunnel just above Zermatt).

At the end of the line, the Matterhorn is visible on a clear day. At the summit there is the Kulmhotel (& former observatory), restaurants and interactive exhibition 'ZOOOM the Matterhorn'.

Gornergrat is a starting point for many hikes, as it lies surrounded by 29 peaks rising above 4,000 m (13,123 ft) in the Alps and several glaciers, including the Gorner Glacier (which is the second longest glacier in the Alps). It is also a popular skiing area.

The Gornergrat Railway is the second highest railway in Europe after the Jungfrau, and the highest open-air railway of the continent. The line opened in 1898, and was the first electric rack railway to be built in Switzerland.
