CASUAL SIGHTINGS OF COYOTES, Trabuco NTS Basin, 17 May 2022, and IRWD San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary, 31 May 2022, Irvine, California, by Kat Avila, copyright 2022.

At Trabuco NTS Basin, a coyote was lapping water from the channel leading to the northernmost pond, and then walked south along the pond heading southeast. When the coyote started walking south along the pond, all the mallards banded together in the center of the pond and all faced the coyote. I hadn’t seen the females and juveniles before that, just the male ducks. It was an amazing behavior to see. I wish I had gotten a photo of it.

At IRWD San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary, a coyote and 2 pups, and 1 frozen rabbit standing on its hind legs just feet away from them. I came upon the scene by accident as I turned a corner. I don’t know what happened to the rabbit as I slowly backed away in the opposite direction. I think it got away as probably all parties were spooked. (I’d rather see a rabbit eating rather than one being eaten.)
