In the introduction to my book Mastering Composition I said the title of this book could have been "Shapes, Shapes, Shapes". So much of the shift from painting things, objects, subject matter rests is seeing shapes.

If you can see shapes you can paint shapes. And in the end that is all a painting is, some shapes on a 2D surface.
