If you think electric cars are boring, you've never seen the Volkswagen ID.R in action. This prototype electric vehicle is faster and lighter than you could imagine.

In 2015, in the aftermath of their diesel emissions scandal, VW pulled out of all motorsport. They had been winning in World Rally Championship, Dakar, and 24 Hours of Le Mans, but they had to leave it all.

In 2018, they returned to motorsport with a vehicle that had no emissions whatsoever: the ID.R. It rolled to the start line at Pikes Peak and when the flag dropped, it was off, leaving a trail of dust behind it and only the sound of gear whine echoing through the Colorado trees.

Then it went fast. Really fast.
