On Tuesday, June 8, 2021, Skyland Trail hosted a free webinar for clinical professionals in partnership with Sierra Tucson that covered treatment-resistant depression and transcranial magnetic stimulation. No continuing education credits were offered or are available for this webinar.

Approximately one-third of patients with major depressive disorder do not respond to treatment, with only half achieving remission. This results in high morbidity and makes major depression one of the leading causes of disability in the world per the World Health Organization. Early intervention, intensive and multimodal treatment is key to improving outcomes in this patient population. Challenges inherent to treatment include polymorphism in the presentation, multifactorial etiology, and complex pathophysiology.

In this presentation, Dr. Chhatwal will review current evidence for approaching patients with difficult-to-treat presentations using psychopharmacology, psychotherapy, neurotherapeutics, and complementary-alternative medicine. In addition, we will discuss the latest developments in conceptualizing treatment resistance and novel, experimental treatments that are under investigation.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is an FDA-approved, non-invasive, and highly effective treatment for adults with depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and other conditions. Dr. Hunter will focus primarily on the use of TMS in depression, including mechanism of action, patient selection, treatment expectations, and new directions in the field of TMS.

Speakers:
- Jasleen Chhatwal, MD, Chief Medical Officer, Director of Mood Program, Sierra Tucson
- Ben Hunter, MD, Medical Director of Professional Services, Skyland Trail
