Here's the thing - you want to go electric but it seems too much of a leap. Perhaps pure-electrics are a little too expensive for a convenient range, or you might be a business user.

This where or plug-in hybrids, or PHEVs, come in as they offer a decent electric range suitable for daily commuting, but once the electric range has been exhausted the petrol engine can be used if you don't want to charge up. They're also great for business users as PHEVs attract low company car tax.

One of the newest to arrive in 2021 is the Audi A3 40 TFSI e. Audi has offered a plug-in hybrid A3 in the past – the A3 e-tron – but this is TFSI e is based on the newest A3 that's packed with Audi's latest technology and sharp-edged styling.

The A3 40 TFSI e shares a lot with its sister cars the Volkswagen Golf GTE and the SEAT Leon e-Hybrid, but in typical Audi style, there's a bit more glitz on offer compared with those models and it arguably has a more upmarket badge.

It uses a 1.4-litre petrol engine, an electric motor and a 13kWh battery giving 201bhp, 31g/km of CO2 and an electric range of around 40 miles.

A more powerful 45 TFSI e will arrive in early 2021 too, but here Nicki Shields takes a look at the 40 TFSI e and gives her verdict.
