UPDATE: I made a video on how to do this same task with Bimmerlink. Check it out!

BMW i8's produced in the EU from 1/3/2018 to present have a petrol particulate filter inside the muffler. Feedback from owners of EU produced BMW i8's report very little difference in exhaust note when modifying the exhaust in these cars. Be aware, if your car was produced from 1/3/2018 to present, any exhaust modification may not produce noticeable results, as the particulate filter installed inside the muffler, may be restricting exhaust noise from reaching the tail pipe, regardless if the exhaust flap is open or closed. Thank you to Fred Halvorsrød for performing the testing, research and feedback on this topic.

I spent many weeks trying to figure out how to modify my BMW i8 exhaust. The exhaust valve is electronically actuated, and normally closed. So, I needed to figure out a way to open it and then keep it open. At first, I disconnected the actuator from the exhaust flap and wired it in place. That worked well, but I wanted a less intrusive way to keep that flap open. So, I spent time researching the BMW i8 service manual and discovered that the exhaust valve actuator was protected by a 7.5 amp fuse labeled Fuse 58. I disconnected the fuse while the flap was closed and the car never displayed a trouble code or check engine light. This was good data, as I was able to determine that pulling the fuse would not result in any annoying notifications. However, in order to keep that flap open, I would need to drive with the engine under high load (in Sport Mode at Full Throttle). I decided to try to pull the fuse by myself while operating the vehicle. What I decided on was to use a string and a 10lb weight.

If you are an iOS user, you can use Bimmerlink to open the valve and then pull the fuse.
