Billbugs are a type of weevil known to infest turfgrass. Adult billbugs have six legs; they range in color from brown to grey; they possess elytra to protect their wings; they have segmented antennae, and they have elongated snouts with their mouths at the end.

While adult billbugs are capable of feeding on grass blades and stems, most of the damage is done by their larvae. Billbug larvae look similar to beetle grubs. They have white pasty bodies with brown heads. To differentiate them from beetle grubs, note that billbug larvae have humped backs. When fully matured, billbug larvae would have grown to be ¼ to ½ inch in length.

Billbug damage can form circular to irregularly shaped patches in your lawn. Because this can look like damage from other pests or stress, you’ll need to conduct a closer inspection to make sure you are dealing with billbugs. When you see dead patches form during July and August, you can inspect the sites closer to confirm billbug activity. You can pull up dead grass stems to look for billbug larvae inside, or you can check the healthy grass next to it to search for adult billbugs.

To get rid of billbugs in your lawn, you’ll need to use insecticides labeled to treat billbugs above and below your turf’s surface. We recommend you use Bifen LP and Dominion 2L. These products together will treat both adult and larval billbugs, ensuring total control of your lawn. Apply Bifen LP at a rate of 1.15 to 2.3 pounds per 1,000 square feet of treatment area. Apply Dominion 2L at a rate of 0.46 to 0.6 fluid ounces per 1,000 square feet of treatment area.

Once billbugs have been eliminated from your lawn, continue regular treatment and maintenance to ensure they won’t come back. Rake and dethatch your lawn regularly to disturb egg-laying sites or potential mating activity. Besides deterring billbugs, this will also strengthen your turf’s roots by improving your lawn’s circulation and airflow. Finally, be sure to make reapplications of Bifen LP and Dominion 2L every 90 days for continued pest protection.
