Johnny originally contacted Mojotone about a custom-wound set of Firebird replacement pickups after becoming dissatisfied with the constricted voice and flat dynamics of the pickup set he was using. The pickups they designed ended up being a perfect match for Johnny's unique tone and style, exhibiting a full, natural frequency response and a broad dynamic range. Mojotone also perfectly balanced the output between the neck and bridge, making for a seemless transition between tones. Following several months of touring with the new pickups, Johnny and Mojotone decided to release them as a signature model. The Johnny Winter Firebird signature pickups are based on a recipe of aged, cast Alnico magnets, vintage-spec 42 gauge plain enamel wire, and a steel reflector plate. They are available in chrome, gold, or relic-ed finishes, with mounting options for Firebird or Les Paul Deluxe guitars, and are handmade in the USA.
