i. What is sore throat?
When there is inflammation of throat leading to pain or scratchiness or irritation.

ii. What are the causes of sore throat?
The most common cause of sore throat are viral illness. They do not require antibiotics unless secondary bacterial infection occurs. They are self limiting and usually gets good after 7 - 10 days.
Other causes are:
a. Bacterial infection : most common organism is group A streptococcus.
b. Allergy.
c. Gastro esophageal reflux disease.
d. Trauma
e. Tumor

iii. What are the other associated symptoms with sore throat?
a. Difficulty in swallowing
b. Difficulty in talking
c. Fever.
d. Dry cough
e. Runny nose
f. Sneezing
g. Nasal congestion
h. Difficulty in breathing

iv. When to consult a doctor?
If you are have sore throat along with down listed symptoms, kindly consult a doctor.
a. Difficulty in breathing
b. Severe difficulty in swallowing
c. Persistent fever
d. Swollen glands in neck

v. How to treat sore throat at home?
A. Warm salt water gargle: This is the first and the best thing to do at home. You must do it properly, otherwise it will be in efficient.

How to make salt water gargle solution?
Mix 1/2 to 1/4 of teas spoonful of salt into 240ml of warm water.

How to gargle?
Put the water in your mouth, tilt your head backward so that the solution reaches the throat. Then gargle for 30 sec to 1 minute. Then swish the water to mouth and teeth and spit it out into the sink.

Benefits of salt water gargle?
a. Osmosis effect
b. Wash away bacteria, fungi and allergens.
c. Balance the PH of mouth - prevent gingivitis (inflammation of gum).
d. Prevent upto 40% of upper respiratory tract infections.

B. Drink plenty of fluids

C. Take adequate rest: Resting is healing.

D. Avoid smoking, chemical irritants and dusts.

E. If pain persists, take acetaminophen or ibuprofen.

F. If features of allergy are present, take antihistamines.

G. If any alarming symptoms, consult a doctor.
