Puerto Rico is an unincorporated territory of the United States; It is a Commonwealth with self-government status. It is located in the Americas, northeast of the Caribbean, east of the island of Hispaniola, and west of the United States Virgin Islands. The archipelago of Puerto Rico includes the main island of Puerto Rico (8,896 km2)—the smallest of the Greater Antilles—and a number of smaller cays and islands; of which the largest are Vieques (135 km2), Mona (55 km2) and Culebra (30 km2). The island of Puerto Rico has a tropical climate and, despite its size, it has a diversity of ecosystems: dry and rain forests, karstic zone, mountainous areas, coastal and marine ecosystems, as well as rivers and lakes.
San Juan (official name: Autonomous Municipality of San Juan Bautista) is the capital city of Puerto Rico and one of the 78 municipalities2 of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. In the 2010 Census it had a population of 442,447 inhabitants and a population density of 1,983.45 people per km².
