The Granite City has been famed for being 'The Oil Capital of Europe' - now oil & gas has been found under Aberdeen itself!

Anyone in Aberdeen throughout March 2023 will have noticed a jack-up drilling rig in the harbour. This was supposedly in for repairs - we can now report that this was likely a cover story for drilling activity.

The consortium, Gull Able Oil, is believed to have struck hydrocarbons in a hither-to-unknown sedimentary sequence beneath the previously mapped igneous & metamorphic rocks.

In an interpretation that has surprised geologists, it can now be revealed that the Moine Thrust is far more extensive than previously thought and indeed stretches beneath Aberdeen, opening up an entirely new play.

With a second rig now on site, appraisal drilling is understood to be commencing imminently with Balmedie & Trump International golf links believed to be the intended locations of follow-up wells.

With up to 2 Tcf discovered, this field could greatly assist with UK energy security - provided the origin of the investment can be better understood. However, a field of this size would require a purpose-built refinery. Plans are in place to build this mega-structure in the Torry area - a move that will understandably cause uproar amongst locals.

Oil is often referred to as 'black gold'... this sounds more like 'fools gold'...
