Until I used the new Electric Chainsaw to dock a pair of Blocks from the Trunk of the Box Tree which died in the 2019/'20 Heatwave Drought..., I had never questioned the received "wisdom" asserting that what I had tagged
Radial Regrowth was actually
Epicormal Regrowth - which began from the
Sub-Bark Fibres, as the tree's response to having almost died in a fire or a Drought ; featuring new Shoots growing out Radially from the Trunk to cover the old "dead" structure with new Solar Panels with which to conduct Photosynthesis, thus feeding the Roots with Starches & Sugars..., QUICKLY !!!

And
Behold -
When one actually gets around to cutting and smoothing and oiling the cut face ; then one can SEE that
Epicormal Regrowth
Radiates out from the Centre of the Sapling.

There are Rays being built into the Trunk heading out in all directions and the
True-Wood & Sapwood both grow around the
Rays, and form those little "Woodspikes" it "Thorns" all up and down the Tree at the Wood/Bark Interface...

Who knew ?
