Recession equals mass layoffs, intense competition for what little job openings are available, and ultimately — fewer hirings.

Even though there are no 100% recession-proof jobs, a few career paths will not suffer a heavy blow during such trying times.

While some of them require higher education or an advanced degree, others do not. So, if you are looking for a safe haven in the employment sector, here are the top fifteen recession-proof jobs and careers.

1. Medical Professional (02:09)

A career in medicine will see that you have a sense of financial security even in economic downturns.

2. Mental Health Professional (02:47)

Along with physical health, stress impacts our mental health as well — perhaps even more than we would like to admit. Unfortunately, it is no secret that mental health plummets during times of recession.

3. Senior Care & Hospice Provider (03:29)

One aspect of our lives that recession cannot change is aging. As a matter of fact, assisted living facilities are increasing in number.

4. Pharmacy Technician & Pharmacist (04:08)

Despite the state of our economy, over-the-counter drugs and prescription medication remain unchanged. They are continuously distributed and prioritized by those who need them the most.

5. Veterinarian (04:42)

The health of our pets is just as important as ours. Ultimately, becoming a veterinarian means that you will weather any global financial crisis better than most professions.

6. Funeral Worker (05:15)

Funeral workers are one of the more unconventional entries on our recession-proof job list. Although economic downturns may not be short-lived, life goes on. And sadly, death follows in its footsteps.

7. Accountant (06:00)

Alongside funeral workers, accountants are sure to survive the labor shortage that a recession imposes.

8. IT Professional (06:39)

Information technology is entrenched in our modern society. With or without an economic downturn, it continues to push the boundaries of what we know to be true.

9. Educator (07:28)

Recession cannot stop education. As we have already witnessed, it can only change the way we approach it. After all, children still need to attend school.

10. Law Enforcement Officer (08:06)

Regardless of the recession’s impact on our moral standing, city and state governments will always prioritize public safety.

11. Firefighter (08:55)

You can rest assured that firefighters, as well as fire inspectors and investigators, keep busy at all times.

12. Public Utility Worker (09:39)

Although most people have to find a way to lower their bills during a recession, they still need some of the basic utility services. These include but are not limited to: electricity, gas, water, waste management, and others.

13. Delivery and Courier Worker (10:23)

If this pandemic has taught us anything, it is that delivery and courier services are in high demand.

14. Grocer (11:07)

An economic downturn means that most of us have to cut back on some luxuries. And dining out is often one of the first things to go. As a result, we tend to buy more groceries and cook at home.

15. Real Estate Investor (11:49)

The last job on our list may not come as a surprise. However, we are not talking about casual house flippers.
