This is Tower 22 a US military base located in the far north eastern corner of the country Jordan where In the early morning hours On January 28th 2024 an enemy drone attack killed 3 American soldiers and injured approximately 40 others. Hezbollah in Iraq carried at the strikes on behalf of Iran. Iran's proxies are known for this kind of attack. Could events escalate in the middle east now into a wider regional war?

But Why is the US military in Jordan in the first place? What went wrong that this attack was able to be pulled off? Was the US military’s retaliation effective at stopping the enemy? This episode has everything you need to know about the unfolding crisis in the middle east. The United States and Jordan actually have a pretty tight bilateral relationship for over 70 years now. Their warm and fuzzy allows for 3,000 total US troops stationed to be here. From Jordans perspective the benefit is that the U.S. has provided them with more than $20 billion in assistance Since 1951. That money has been used to fully renovate 25 hospitals and most recently 12 black hawk helicopters which are very useful in counter terror missions.

Now, If we put on our strategic thinking hat these troops are important partly because of a single base called the Al-Tanf base largely made up of 200 high speed special operators. It isn’t even located in Jordan but instead just across the fence over in Syria. Al-Tanf garrison is pretty much the only thing standing in the way of Iran having a straight shot, clear supply route to funnel weapons through Iraq through Syria and then into Hezbollah in Lebanon. It’s located right on the Baghdad-Damascus highway and according to the Brookings Institution it “denies Iran one of the three potential land-bridge routes between Iran and the Mediterranean.” And so from the perspective of Iran and its proxies they very much do not want Al-tanf base or Tower 22 standing in their way.
