At the end of season 5 of the Expanse a breakaway Martian fleet enacted a plan to transit the Laconia Ring Gate. They were working with Marco Inaros and the Free Navy to take control of the Sol Ring Gate after taking Medina Station. Marco traded the active protomolecule sample he stole from Fred Johnson, and the Protogen scientist Paolo Cortazar for a fleet of Martian built gunships. This was all the plan of Winston Duarte a MCRN commander who wants to create a new society beyond the rings.

In season 5 we saw that the Barkeith with Admiral Sauveterre and Emily Babbage disappeared while transiting the Laconia Ring. Their ship entered the ring for transit, but didn’t emerge out of the other side. We saw that what happened, which is called Going Dutchman, seems to be connected to the Unknown Aggressors that destroyed the Ring Builder civilization.

Duarte chose Laconia as his destination because he had access to probe data allowing him to survey the different systems. He saw that Laconia had a protomolecule built artifact in orbit, and that’s what we see in the episode 10 end credits scene. The credits scene is supposed to be mysterious but book readers know what it is showing. We explain what you see in the sky of Laconia, and what the Expanse books say about it.
