 Published On Sep 29, 2023

Welcome to Episode 17 of Zebra Spotlight. We were honoured to interview one of Hollywood’s giants, Paul Hirsch, A.C.E. Paul has edited over 40 films, among them, George Lucas’ Star Wars for which he received an Academy Award in 1978, and The Empire Strikes Back. He worked with Brian De Palma, on the films Carrie, Blowout and Mission: Impossible. “Brian taught me a lot about the difference between cutting trailers and cutting features. And my two other great teachers were trial and error.” He also edited for Herbert Ross on Footloose,

The Secret of My Success and Steel Magnolias; as well as for John Hughes on Ferris Bueller's Day Off and Planes, Trains & Automobiles; and on Falling Down for Joel Schumacher. In 2005, he received his second Academy Award nomination for Ray, a biopic based on the life of Ray Charles, directed by Taylor Hackford.

The various genres in his resume include drama, action, horror, musical comedy, fantasy, suspense, mystery, and comedy. In recent years, he edited Source Code, directed by Duncan Jones, Mission Impossible - Ghost Protocol, directed by Brad Bird, and Warcraft, his second film with director Duncan Jones, whilst acting as additional editor on many films. He is the author of a memoir entitled A Long Time Ago in a Cutting Room Far, Far Away. “Only film and music require that an audience comprehend the details of a work of art over a given period of time.” Paul was born and raised in New York.

His father, Joseph Hirsch, was a well-known painter whose works are in the permanent collections of major museums in the US. He studied music at the High School of Music & Art in New York, and he majored in Art History at Columbia University. He now resides with his family in Pacific Palisades, Los Angeles.

During this episode, Paul explains the role of Editor during film production and recounts some of his experiences whilst working on movies such as Star Wars and meeting directors such as Steven Spielberg and actors such as Tom Cruise and Robert Redford.
We take a deeper dive into the qualities of great versus poor editing and discuss some of his favourite shows. He also gives his opinions on Star Wars, new and old, Disney/Marvel, being a “guest” of the 21st century, his thoughts on artificial intelligence and more.
