Let's talk about primary reformer tube wall temperatures and design life. I'm currently working on a project to further help our customers with their tube wall temperature monitoring. Something that maybe everyone knows but that I learned awhile ago is what a huge impact running over design temperature has on your tube life. 💡

(Full disclosure - I am not a tube expert like MetalTek or another
tube manufacturer but I'm going to talk about this any way!) 👍

Here is just one case study:

At a specified set of operating conditions - a set of tubes (for
example) has a 11.5 year design life.

If these tubes are operating at 10°F above design temperature
--- 24% of the life is reduced so your design life goes from 11.5 years to
8.7 years. 📉

30°F hotter than design (I said 50°F in my video but meant 30°F - sorry!) - reduces the design life by 59% from 11.5 years to 4.7 years 📉

Increase in design temp to a decrease in tube life is not linear.

This is why it is so important to consistently and accurately measure your tube wall temperatures. 🔥

What are your procedures for measuring tube wall temperatures? How often? What equipment are you using?
