The Ford Ranger FX4 Max may not be as familiar as Wildtrak, XLT or Raptor, but there's a chance it's the sweet spot in the range if you're looking for some of the best attributes of all three of those trim levels.
The Ranger FX4 Max is based on the XLT, has the best engine/transmission from the Wildtrak, and gets the Raptor's Fox Shocks and BF Goodrich all terrain tyres and a few other handy elements as well.
It undercuts the Raptor X by about $13,000, has a better payload and better towing capacity. So is there a catch? Or is this Ford pickup the best of both worlds?
We've tested the 4WD / 4x4 Ranger FX4 Max with 800kg of sandbags to establish its tradie credentials for this review. Watch the video to see how it handles itself compared to a Toyota HiLux, Mazda BT-50, Isuzu D-Max and Nissan Navara.
