A MiG-31 fighter jet was scrambled from an airbase in the Murmansk region to meet the US bombers. the US bombers approached but turned away from Russian airspace. The Norway's Armed Forces are partly reluctant to provide information about the flights. The Russian fighter crew identified the air targets as a pair of US Air Force B-1B strategic bombers. During their transition through the Barents Sea, the B-1s were intercepted by a Russian MiG-31 Foxhound.
